"Remember Me" is a 1997 song by British DJ Alexis 'Lex' Blackmore under his pseudonym Blue Boy. It peaked at No. 8 on the UK Singles Chart in February 1997[3] and No. 2 on the American trip the light fantastic chart.[iv] Additionally it peaked within the top 10 in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Kingdom of norway, Scotland, Espana, Sweden and Switzerland. On the Eurochart Hot 100, the track reached No. 13.

Background [edit]

The track originally appeared on Marking Farina's remix anthology Mushroom Jazz Volume 1. Jive Records acquired it and earmarked information technology for single release. The radio edit was remixed by Certain Is Pure, who were also responsible for a remix of Lost in Music, and was released on the Pharm sublabel imprint.

The track is built effectually samples from "Adult female of the Ghetto" by Marlena Shaw: "Recollect me? I'yard the 1 who had your babies", in reference to African-American maids raising white children for little pay, came from a live version, whereas the "ging, gi-gi-gi-gi-ging..." sample repeated throughout the song is the scat portion of the original song'due south refrain.[5] Shaw had the following to say about information technology:

When it showtime happened, and the Mushroom Jazz people contacted me from San Francisco, I was kind of excited most it. But then, once I actually HEARD it, my first reaction was 'Oh my goodness! How in the world tin can I mayhap stand onstage and sing those same notes, and those same lyrics, over and over over again?'! You know, 'I'g the one who had your babies - ha-ha-ha-ha'! I hateful, it's different when information technology's being recorded and y'all're only pushing the push! Only then, one time I got used to the idea, I became excited all over again! And really several other people have sampled the song since, though with them it's been the onstage version I did on the (1973-released) 'Live At Montreux' album that seems to accept got more attention - I gauge because it was more than spontaneous. Which, as I say, is something that HAPPENS in my live performances! And I particularly liked the St. Germain version, which had more of a jazz flavour to it.[half dozen]

Critical reception [edit]

Larry Flick from Billboard described the song as a "wickedly catchy dance anthem", adding further that "while the groove is accordingly aggressive and street-credible, the song is iced with accessible keyboards, and a loopy hook takes up permanent residence in the encephalon upon impact."[7] Australian music aqueduct Max included "Remember Me" in their listing of "1000 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2012.[eight] Andy Beevers from the magazine's RM Trip the light fantastic toe Update noted that information technology is "wooing the jazz and funk oversupply", placing a Marlena Shaw archetype "over a very basic but very boisterous funk rhythm. Information technology's blindingly unproblematic, dead cheeky and undeniably effective".[9]

Chart performance [edit]

"Recall Me" was very successful on the charts all over the world. In Europe, it was a top ten hit in Denmark, Finland, Republic of iceland, Republic of ireland, Norway, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the Great britain. In the latter, the unmarried peaked at number eight in its third week on the Great britain Singles Chart, on ix February 1997.[3] Tt also reached the top spot on both the UK Dance and UK R&B singles charts. Additionally, "Call up Me" was a superlative 20 striking in Belgium, French republic, Germany, Italy and kingdom of the netherlands, likewise equally on the Eurochart Hot 100, where it peaked at No. xiii in June 1997. Outside Europe, it reached number two on the Billboard Hot Trip the light fantastic toe Lodge Play in the United states, number six on the RPM Dance Chart in Canada and No. 17 in Commonwealth of australia. The single was awarded with a gold record in Australia and the UK, with a auction of 35,000 and 400,000 units.

A music video was produced to promote the single. It was later published on Altra Moda Music'southward official YouTube channel in April 2013. The video has amassed more iii.four 1000000 views as of Oct 2021.[x]

Cover versions and sampling [edit]

In late 2008, the Australian psychedelic stone band Tame Impala started performing this song as office of their alive sets, somewhen recording a comprehend version of information technology as a B-side to the "Sundown Syndrome" single. This cover became quite popular in Australia, reaching No. 78 on the Triple J Hottest 100, 2009.[eleven]

In late 2010, Gianni Luminati of Walk off the Earth released a song on YouTube, "Jammin' a Hammock", playing three instruments simultaneously, while lying in a hammock; information technology is an estimation of this song.[12]

In November 2012, British musician Daley sampled this song for his own composition "Remember Me", with the refrain sung by Jessie J.[xiii]

In 2013, South African group Goldfish sampled the song for their rails "3 2nd Retentiveness". TheSouthAfrican.com said of the song: "Where to start? Obviously the title track, which takes the vocal sample "Call back Me" and builds around information technology to a level which justifies its standing as the basis of the album."[fourteen]
